Commemoration Lesson using Drama and History

Rationale

Good drama work in history builds on historical learning and helps to transform knowledge into understanding by helping pupils to: chart the chronology of a historical period; gain a broader understanding of the events which they had studied through historical sources and a better understanding of the motives and feelings of key people who acted as they did at certain key moments in history(Vass 2008)

The purpose of the lessons is to develop the children’s sense of empathy. The lessons will focus the children on understanding WHY people in the past acted as they did as opposed to knowing WHAT they did.
