Introduction to Case Study Commemorating the Role of Women in the Easter Rising.
School: St. Mary’s High School Newry
Class : Year 10
Topic : The Causes and Consequences of Partition
This case study focuses on three lessons delivered to a class of year 10 girls in an all ability secondary school using three different methods of facilitation which were part of staff development training programme provided through the Shared Classrooms Deepening the Learning Project .
While studying the events of 1916 in Ireland the class had noted that there was no mention about the role women played in the Easter Rising in their history textbooks or indeed about the role women played in Irish history generally across the twentieth century. The teacher prior to using the lessons had facilitated discussions about what role the pupils would have expected women to play and if they considered that role to be an important one.
